Is organic food vegan? Many vegans are asking this question because they believe organic means vegan. A Google search shows that people have been asking this for the last five years. So, what is the answer?
Veganism is based on moral beliefs, but organic farming simply means growing food or raising animals in a way that harms the environment as little as possible. Therefore, it should be that on all issues, veganism and organic cannot mix but should complement each other.
The short answer is that organic food can be vegan. This means that sometimes organic food is not vegan. This is because being vegan and being organic are not always the same. In fact, being organic does not mean being vegan, and being vegan does not mean being organic. I will explain what I mean by this in the article.
difference between veganism and organic food?
Vegan food and organic food differ because they are grown and made in different ways.
Organic is more about how farmers are growing their products, while vegan is what a person doesn’t put in their body.
Organic farmers do not use manufactured fertilizers, fake pesticides, or genetically altered organisms (GMOs), or non-organic farming chemicals. Vegans do not consume meat and fish but also do not use by-products like milk and honey as the basis of recipes.
Therefore, organic farming is done to reduce harm to the environment and be friendlier to nature.
It is a way of living that excludes the use of any animal product for food. Vegans also try to avoid using any animal product in other parts of life, like not going to zoos, circuses, and other events that involve animals.

Why Vegans confuses organic With vegan?
The reason behind this misunderstanding is mainly because most vegans do not know what veganism is.
They only know they do not consume meat and dairy. Hence, they directly associate veganism with organic food, thinking that if it is organic then it has to be vegan too.
The logic behind the confusion is that organic farming seems to do well with the environment. This is because the preservation of the environment is one of the principles of veganism.
So, it makes much sense for a person to confuse organic food with vegan food since organic food can be good for the environment.
Organic doesn’t necessarily mean vegan. Why?
The truth is that veganism is something else other than what the term organic does.
Veganism is basically an ideology that says in everything and in every way, it is wrong to use and exploit animals for food and other purposes.
Many vegans are confused because they feel that all products which are marked as ‘organic’ are vegan.
Not true. ‘Organic’ means the product is produced in a manner good for the environment, but not that the product has to be vegan.
Organically grown produce can use animal inputs such as milk, honey, eggs and other dairy products, as well as lard and gelatin marketed as vegetarian gelatin.
Another reason is that in our modern world, we consume organic food in our diet although it’s grown without the usage of pesticides and chemicals but indirectly involves the exploitation of animals to grow those foods without a care for them or their welfare.
For instance, if you are a vegan and you end up purchasing organic potatoes that are pesticide-free, the potatoes could have been grown by using manure from animals.
So, whereas you will be buying organic potatoes, you are still harming animals. That is because, indirectly, animals are used to grow them since manure was used to grow them.
What vegans should understand in the first place is that organic farming is not necessarily an ethical concept just like veganism is.
Should a vegan eat organic food?
I hope you understand now the difference between organic food and vegan food.
You must still be wondering if we should eat organic food or not, though.
Well, the answer is simple
In today’s world, it is almost impossible to completely stop using animals indirectly in farming, like using animal manure (unless you grow your food yourself in a vegan way). But what you can do is focus on the basics of veganism.
That does not use dairy or meat (I mean there should be no clear direct use of animals) and if you are very strict about veganism, then take a very close look at the ingredient list of every product before you put it to use, even if it is organic.
I have dedicated my life towards veganism and now I am analyzing products and food, research about them, and provide an opinion on their adherence to veganism principles.
You can read more about them on my blog and if you have any doubt regarding any food or product feel free to contact me at [email protected]. I will provide a detailed review of it.
