Introduction:
A snack that you can eat in breakfast, lunch, and dinner, peanut butter is one of the most desirable spreads globally, if not the most popular.
As the name suggests, peanut butter consists of peanuts, which are roasted and grounded until they turn into a paste.
Beloved of every age group, peanut butter is a house staple in almost every household in the world.
Rightly so, with the convenience and taste, it provides as a snack, its health benefits are a bonus.
It is used as an ingredient in a myriad of dishes, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches being the universal snack combo.
You can also combine them with other foods, like oatmeal, chocolate, and various bread types.
As far as the health benefits are concerned, peanut butter is a well-rounded nutrition source, especially for its price.
According to a study, eating peanut butter every day reduces the risk of heart diseases by 38%.
Peanut butter and veganism:
Essentially, veganism is the practice of abstaining from the use of animal products.
Like every other product, vegans spend a lot of their time think and researching if this particular tasty spread is in line with their beliefs or not.
Check out this Google Trend Snippet. It shows people’s growing desire for “Vegan Peanut Butter” :
Some people deduce by the name of the food that peanut butter is a type of butter and so must have been made using dairy products.
But that is not the case, as you will see below.
Peanut butter, in essence, is vegan-friendly because, as stated above, the main ingredient in them is peanuts that are roasted and made into a paste.
But some brands of peanut butter can be non-vegan but is very rare.

Those that are non-vegan are so because of some ingredients we will discuss below:
Sugar:
Some brands use cane sugar as a sweetener for their peanut butter.
Cane sugar is a product that uses bone char in its processing, an animal product that goes against veganism and what it stands for.
Read more about sugar in this article.
Oil:
Oil is usually added and used in the manufacture to increase the serving of a packet or bottle of the product and reduce cost per unit.
Whether the oil being used is in line with vegan sentiments depends on the type of oil used.
Plant-based oils like peanut oil and sunflower oil present no objections.
The problem arises when the brand uses palm oil, something which is advocated against by a large number of the vegan community.
E numbers:
E numbers are artificial additives added to emulsify the product and are mostly plant-based, while some could be animal-based.
Vegans must confirm whether the E-number used is plant-based or not.
Hence if you are a vegan, it is relatively easy for you to make a decision when it comes to the question of peanut butter being in line with vegan sentiments or not.
As said above, most popular brands today are vegan-based, and the rare ones that tend to have questionable ingredients may not necessarily include animal-based products.
But if you are someone that does not take any risks and abides by the general rule of thumb that vegans follow, i.e., “when in doubt, leave it out,” it is better for you that you leave out a product that does not explicitly state if it’s animal-free or not.
Health benefits of peanut butter:
- Studies suggest that peanuts and essentially other types of nuts reduce a person’s risk of being obese. It promotes satiety, which is a feeling of stomach fullness that stops an individual from overeating.
- As stated above, high consumption of nuts, including peanuts, has reduced mortality by heart diseases.
- It is also ubiquitous in bodybuilding because peanut butter acts as a supplement for bulking. After all, it is a rich source of protein and caloric density.
- This snack food also helps us to keep check of our blood glucose levels. It is a good source for keeping check because it doesn’t contain any sugar.
